Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. So that we can better plan, please let us know the night before of your approximate breakfast arrival time.

We are also happy to arrange an earlier "First Tracks" breakfast if you want to hit the trails or slopes at first light. Please let us know when you check in if you want to take advantage of First Tracks. A "First Tracks" breakfast won't be as elaborate as our standard multiple-course breakfast, but depending on the time you want to eat, we'll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Check in and Check out

Check in at the High MountainLodge is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please contact us if you will need late check in. Traffic and weather frequently conspire to slow people down, so just call us (970-726-5958) if you will be delayed so we can plan.

Check out is at 11 a.m. It may be possible to have a late check out if we do not have guests coming into the room that night. Feel free to ask, and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs. If we do have guests coming into the room you are vacating the same day, we will enforce the 11 a.m. checkout.

We strongly discourage check-ins before 4 p.m. Mid-afternoons are our time for shopping and errands away from the Lodge. You may not find us at the Lodge prior to 4 p.m. We are happy to suggest activities in the area if you find yourself in the neighborhood before check in time.


Because we are a small inn, cancellations have a significant impact on our operations. We therefore strictly enforce our cancellation policy.

  • Reservations canceled more than a month before the first day of a stay will incur no penalty.
  • Reservations canceled more than two weeks before the first day of a stay but less than a month before the first day of a stay will incur a $35 cancellation charge.
  • Reservations canceled less than two weeks before the first day of the stay will be charged for the entire cost of the reservation unless we can rebook the room. If we are able to rebook the room, the only penalty will be the $35 cancellation charge.

If guests' travel plans are subject to change or alteration, we suggest that they consider trip cancellation insurance from an independent source. Here is a good example. Also, do you wonder if you need travel insurance? Read this excellent article.


The High Mountain Lodge is a non-smoking establishment. No smoking is allowed anywhere inside the buildings, including guest rooms, the Atrium, and other public spaces. Similarly, guests may not use "smoke free" products inside guest rooms or interior public areas. A $150 cleaning fee will be charged if guests smoke or use any tobacco products in their rooms or public areas.

Guests may smoke on the patios and decks of the lodge, but we ask that they be courteous and considerate to non-smoking guests. We also ask that smoking guests do not litter the property by discarding their used cigarettes, ash, or other byproducts on the grounds.

With the passage of Colorado laws legalizing marijuana, we feel it necessary to emphasize our no-smoking policy. Our policy is based on our desire to keep our rooms and public areas odor-free for subsequent guests, and our $150 charge reflects the expense we incurr to remove the lingering odors from any sort of smoking that attach to the fabrics in the room.


The High Mountain Lodge welcomes families traveling with children. We do not charge for infants or children under two years of age. We charge $15 for children 2 through 12 years of age. Teenagers (13 and up) are charged the adult rate of $25 additional. If a child or teenager is traveling with only one parent and will not require a separate bed, there is no additional charge over the room rate.

We discourage families with smaller children from staying in rooms opening directly into the pool Atrium (Rooms 6 and 8). Parents must supervise their children at all times.


Dogs are welcome to bring well-behaved owners with them when they visit the High Mountain Lodge. Our Doggie Welcome package includes pick-up sacks, treats, and a play toy.

We have a 32-acre pasture with three ponds and two creeks that is perfect for exploration, and several miles of roads to wander, too.

Dogs must be under control--voice or lead--at all times. They may not roam the grounds without their owner's supervision, and they may not chase our neighbors' horses or the occasional deer or moose (a really bad idea, as moose are large, fast, and cranky). Early mornings and late evenings are times when predators are most active, so it's best to have dogs and their people sticking close to each other at those times. Predators include coyotes and foxes as well as eagles, hawks, and owls.

Dogs (no matter how well-behaved) must be leashed in the pool atrium at all times. When the pool is covered, dogs think it is solid ground; when the pool is open, water-loving breeds think they've found heaven. Neither is true.

Owners must pick up after their dogs. Even in seeming wild settings such as the High Mountain Lodge, animal scat can disturb the ecosystem, attract predators, and annoy hikers. As part of our "doggie welcome package" we provide pick-up sacks. Additional sacks are available in the office.

Out of consideration for other guests (as well as your dog), guests may not leave their dogs in their rooms for extended periods of time (even if the animal is comfortable being crated). When guests engage in day-long activities inappropriate for dogs (such as downhill skiing), we suggest that guests enroll their animals in "doggie day care" or plan to return at lunch to exercise their dog. For day care, guests can make reservations here. Bottom line: dogs may not be left for extended periods in lodge rooms, either crated or loose, under any circumstances. Our doggie daycare partners insist on documentation of an animal being current on shots. If you forget to bring the papers with you, your vet can fax them to us. We don't charge for receiving faxes.

Service dogs. Disabled people traveling with service or companion dogs are the only guests who may bring their animals into the dining lodge. Please alert us of your intentions so that we can isolate our own dog in order to accommodate your needs. Please note that disabled people traveling with a dog must have the animal under precise control at all times. Our purpose is to make all our guests' stay at the High Mountain Lodge comfortable.

We assume that disabled people with service dogs have undergone training--both for themselves and their service dogs-- sufficient so that we can reasonably accommodate their needs.

Regardless of the situation or circumstances, our dog policy always obtains: "Dogs with well-mannered owners are welcome at the High Mountain Lodge.

People with dog allergies should note that we meticulously clean guest rooms after every stay, including cleaning all surfaces and disinfecting the bathrooms. Only you know if this will be adequate to prevent an allergic reaction.

People with extreme allergies to dogs may not be comfortable at the High Mountain Lodge.

We charge $15 per night per dog.

Swimming Pool, Hot Tub, Sauna

POOL The pool is only for the use of registered guests of the High Mountain Lodge. The pool opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. After 9 p.m. is quiet time, although the pool, hot tub, and sauna remain open. A list of pool rules may be found here and is posted in the Atrium, and all guests are responsible for adhering to them. Depending on who is staying at the High Mountain Lodge, we may close the pool early.

Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the pool atrium at all times.

We may close the pool early or open it late depending on our guests' needs.

HOT TUB and SAUNA Like the pool, the hot tub and sauna are only for the use of registered guests of the High Mountain Lodge. Neither the Hot Tub nor the Sauna is suitable for young children. Guests may not drink alcoholic beverages while in the hot tub or sauna.


Candles Because of safety concerns and our fire insurance, candles are not permitted in the guest rooms of the High Mountain Lodge.

Fireplaces Please do not use the fireplaces for cooking (sorry, this prohibition includes s'mores and toasted marshmallows). We do have an outdoor fireplace on our upper deck that is a great place for roasting marshmallows.

Cooking in Rooms Short of warming up leftovers, heating water for drinks, or making popcorn, guests should not attempt to prepare meals in the small microwave ovens in the rooms. Similarly, because the High Mountain Lodge does not have "self catering" accommodations, guests may not use crock pots or other cooking appliances in any of our guest rooms. None of our guest rooms have counter space (or adequate electrical) for preparing meals, or adequate facilities for washing up afterwards.
